Investing in Human Capital at the Bowery Capital People and Talent Summit

 
 
 

People and Talent are hot topics for early stage companies growing quickly in this culture-focused workforce. How do you recruit the best talent? What tools can companies utilize to build diverse and powerful teams? How do you maintain culture and shape company values?

Leading up to the Bowery Capital People and Talent Summit, cred worked with speakers to create sessions built around answering these questions. Speakers and panelists included leaders from Rent The Runway, Button, WayUp, The Muse, Justworks, and others.

WeWork Bryant Park was packed on Thursday, June 7 as the morning started off with a tactical chat by Nikki Goldman of I/O Coaching and WayUp explaining how to build an effective Values Playbook for your company. Following her was a dynamic presentation by Jacqui Maguire of Greenhouse about structured hiring.

Kirsten Behncke Colyer of Justworks, Jordan Wan of CloserIQ, and John-Paul Sukkar of Rent The Runway rounded out a panel called The Company Glow-Up: Maintaining Culture as You Scale. They were followed by the panel: Tools of Engagement: Tools and Data in the People Space, featuring Ilya Usorov of day100, Jennifer Williams of Drive Change, Inc. and John Erban of Axiom. Panel discussions explored the data points that are worth focusing on and the resources that can be used to measure outcomes.

To finish off the summit, Stephanie Mardell of Button taught on how to put ideas into action to sustain diverse and inclusive company growth, then Toni Thompson from The Muse explained the importance of using storytelling to create an image of your company.

Bowery’s Marketing Summit Hits the Mark!

 

The Bowery Capital CXO Quarterly series made its way to San Francisco yesterday for its first Summit of the year with a focus on Marketing. cred worked with The Bowery Capital Team to coordinate a series of tactical chats and panels discussing Marketing for early stage SaaS Marketers. Eight speakers brought insight from their experiences in marketing roles at  Salesforce, Slack, Rubrik, SurveyMonkey, Oracle Data Cloud, and more.

The morning started with a captivating presentation by Bill Macaitis, former CMO of Slack, Zendesk, and Salesforce on “How to Grow Your Unicorn.” His talk was followed by Kara Wilson of Rubrik’s lively sermon about “How to Not F#@k it Up.” The audience was incredibly engaged as discussions around “What is Brand?” and “Scaling from 0 to 100M” brought panelists and the crowd into some spicy debating.  

Maria Pergolino, CMO of Anaplan ended the day with this message that was a crowd favorite:

Everyone sees it.
Everyone knows how to do it.

Driving the Data @ RampUp 2018

 

March 5th and 6th were filled with excitement as RampUp 2018 took over the Fairmont Hotel and the Masonic in San Francisco. We’ve been working with LiveRamp for months to secure close to 170 speakers for this rapidly growing convention of the brightest minds in Digital Marketing and data. We curated 48 sessions of panels, chats, and presentations all focused on the “future of marketing” for TV, brands, agencies, data owners, and publishers.

The first day kicked off with a great conversation between Wells Fargo CMO Jamie Moldafsky and LiveRamp’s Allison Metcalfe. One underlying theme of their conversation was how customers are at the center of everything.

Tuesday brought almost 2,500 attendees and a powerhouse panel of CMOs to kick things off, including former CMO of Airbnb - Jonathan Mildenhall, Cisco CMO - Karen Walker, TripAdvisor CMO - Barbara Messing, and Adobe CMO - Ann Lewnes. The five had an amazing chemistry onstage as they discussed the digital marketing ecosystem. 

Throughout the day, we loved seeing some of our clients show their expertise: Dan Greenberg of Sharethrough, Joanne Chen of Foundation Capital, Matt Keiser of LiveIntent, Thomas Walle of Unacast, Kamakshi Sivaramakrishnan of Drawbridge, Omar Tawakol of Voicera and finally Eva of Voicera (a bot who took notes during Omar’s session).

Nate Silver, American statistician and Author of The Signal and the Noise, closed off the event with an engaging talk about Data and Predictions.

ProxSummit Recap: The Future Is In Close Proximity!

Yesterday, the top 80 Industry Leaders shaping the future of Proximity Marketing came together to create the First Annual ProxSummit, presented by Unacast. We’ve been working with Unacast, the largest proximity marketing platform and global network of proximity sensor companies, to host ProxSummit 2017 - an event highlighting the shift in location data usage to help people understand their connection with the world around them. If that mere concept doesn’t get you excited, the list of top industry speakers certainly will.

This was the inaugural summit bringing in innovators from the advertising and marketing field that were seeking to understand the surge in investments and interest in location-based marketing technologies. The conference advocated for transparency in this specific field, and attendees had a chance to understand the psyche behind accurately approaching innovation through a location-based lens.

Fun fact: The predicted estimate for location-targeted ad spending in 2021 will be approximately $32.4 billion. Our outlook on our day-to-day interactions with places and spaces is about to drastically change as we see growth in technology utilizing location-based data. Yet, what is the value of location-data? What are marketers prioritizing? What does the future hold for this sort of access to knowledge in terms of privacy? All these questions were open for discussion at this year's ProxSummit.

With four separate sessions dedicated to understanding the relevance of location and proximity, one of our favorites had to be “Do You Know Where Data Comes From?" moderated by Street Fight’s David Card. Jeff White (Founder & CEO of Gravy Analytics), Harry Dewhirst (President of Blis), and Brian Handly (Founder of CEO of Reveal Mobile) discussed the role of transparency around the source for data collection in accurately targeting and catering the market.

ProxSummit was held at the beautiful Midtown Loft & Terrace in downtown Manhattan, a rooftop venue overlooking the skyline. Check out some of our favorite highlights:

 

Draper Nexus InsuranceX Recap

 

On June 28, members of the insurance community, alongside large and small technology startups came together for the first Annual InsuranceX Series, hosted by Draper Nexus. cred worked onsite to assist Draper Nexus in this invite-only event, with the goal of connecting members of the insurance community to current game changers within today’s tech scene. An early-stage venture capitalist firm, Draper Nexus focuses on enterprise tech and hardware both in Japan and the US.

Tim Draper (Founder of DFJ and Draper Associates) kicked off the conversation around autonomy, in particular how/when autonomous cars will likely shake up the industry for automotive startups and current insurance leaders.

The event also heard insights from Kate Sampson (VP, Risk Solutions, at Lyft) who presented Lyft’s view on the Future of Personal Transportation and even presented Swoop (an emerging startup looking to automate roadside assistance) with a $50,000 check during a Startup Pitch competition. Representatives from State Farm, Farmer’s Insurance, Atlas Financial, Toyota, BMW i Ventures, and Renault touched on the future of personal transit, InsurTech landscape, connected cars as data platforms, and how startups can best work with insurance providers.

In total, over 100 people participated and took away one key element from the day: while making headlines today, the most capable, and consumer-friendly, autonomous car is still quite a few years away.

Big Data Showcase at VDC Connect2016

 

October 6th was an exciting day at the TIME Inc. building in New York City, as nearly two hundred people gathered for Venture Development Center’s first annual VDC Connect2016.

Some of the biggest data practitioners and industry leaders came together to discuss the future of big data - where it currently stands, who is at the forefront, and the technology used to implement it. Moderated by VDC Chairman & CEO, Dr. Charles Stryker, it was a full day of panels as well as networking opportunities with attendees from AOL, Legendary Entertainment, IBM, Cisco, Avention, and more.

Charles set the stage by giving a big picture overview of what's happening with big data, followed by three panel discussions around companies in transition, analytics, and data implementations. Then, the content closed with three innovative companies taking the stage to present what’s disrupting the big data industry.

Blake Sitney, CEO of Profound Networks, described how Profound compiles comprehensive databases of routable IP addresses on the internet in order to develop tools and platforms for maintaining, scrubbing, exploring, modeling, and interpreting data. CEO of UberMedia Gladys Kong discussed turning mobile data into actionable consumer behavioral insights. We finished the day off with Michael Hussey, CEO of StatSocial, who gave us a peek into how companies like StatSocial gather deeper, richer profiles of consumers by understanding their social activities, sourced by mining publicly available actions from individuals across the social web.

VDC Connect2016’s speakers and attendees winded down with a seafood platter feast, all while taking in the extravagant views from TIME Inc’s new space.

Rocking with Mayfield at Off the Record

 
 

Studio Trilogy - San Francisco, California

 

Taking place for the first time at Studio Trilogy, Off the Record with Mayfield was a night filled with good vibes and energy. We welcomed over 70+ entrepreneurs for a full day of songwriting workshops and sweet jams.

Mayfield’s vision was to create an atmosphere where invitees could step out of their element and let loose with a 2 hour songwriting workshop. Featuring musical talents like Eoin Harrington, Peter Chung, and Mayfield’s own Tim Chang who rocked the workshops with eclectic views on the synergy between songwriting and starting your own business. For the songwriting session, participants used the “Cut Up” technique, which can be a really fun way of creating unique lyrics without having any previous experience.

 
 

The 3 teams then hit the stage and took over the crowd with their own hit singles. From rap verses, to sultry female vocals, and guitar solos it was definitely a night to remember. Friends and colleagues from Mayfield’s network were invited post-workshop for drinks, networking and to cheer on the pumped up performances.
