Speaking 101: How to Make Virtual Sessions More Interactive

 

Speaking at online events is no easy feat. You must ensure your tech is fully functioning, your Wi-Fi is running at lightning speed, in-home distractions are at a minimum, and most importantly, that  your session leaves attendees feeling engaged and inspired. 

Impactful speakers recognize that their sessions aren’t only about the knowledge that they have to share but also about the people who are attending. Losing the attention of your audience is the last thing you want, so we’ve included five key strategies for keeping your audience engaged. 

  1. Keep your audience in the loop
    Many people have grown accustomed to passive virtual webinars and events; make sure to inform your audience this will be an interactive session. Set expectations from the beginning so they are aware of protocol right away.

  2. Use audio & visuals to keep things interesting
    The more our senses are engaged, the more likely we are to internalize the things we experience. Adding audio and visual elements such as music, a brief video, or even gifs, is a great way to perk the audience up and draw their attention back to your presentation.

  3. Make it relative to the real world
    Bringing in real-world examples allows participants to build a frame of reference. You can share resources, social media links, or case studies to provide a full-circle moment for your attendees to tie all of your points together. This also gives them a chance to practically apply to information you share, once they leave your session.

  4. Have fun with features
    Almost all virtual speaking platforms have features that allow you to engage with the audience, including chat, Q&A and polls. These features allow you to make your presentation a conversation with the audience, gauge your attendees understanding, receive direct feedback and answer questions in real time.

  5. Keep in touch
    By the end of your session, your attendees will be feeling inspired and eager to learn more from you. Make sure to include contact information, such as email, social media handles or websites, so your participants are able to further engage with you. If you’re able, take a group photo or screenshot of your session and share it on your social media channels with a friendly note of thanks to attendees.
